015: The Battle Between Making Easy vs. Hard Choices

Get Busy Living Podcast Episode 15

When I think back over my life, I’ve found that time and time again, the hard choices I’ve made were the ones that provided lasting positive change in my life. When I took the easy road, it didn’t have any impact – it was only the hard choices that really brought about change.

I’m where I am today because I’ve had to make hard choices the past three years. They weren’t the most fun at the time. I would have rather been goofing off, watching movies, whatever was on TV, reading magazines.  but I knew I had taken the easy road before that and it led to a life I didn’t want.

If you feel like you’re not making any progress in life, or your just feel stuck, take a look at the type of choices you are making on a consistent basis.

Typically these fall into two categories: easy or hard.

The easy choice take no willpower to do. You just do them. You’re more than happy to do them. It’s comfortable. It’s easy because you’ve done it hundreds or thousands of times. It has become a habit.

The hard choice take a lot of willpower. You don’t automatically make that choice. It makes you uncomfortable. You may not want to do it. It’s hard to do because you haven’t done it that often. It’s not a habit.

When faced with a choice, we immediately will choose the easy one. It’s naturally what we want to do. We always want everything to be easier in our life. Easy feels good. Easy feels relaxing. Easy is stress free.

But the easy choice sometimes is disguised as the wrong one. It appears as the choice that will make you happier, but making the easy choice the majority of the time will lead to unwanted results in your life.

On the other hand, when you make the hard choice the majority of the time, it can lead to extraordinary results. The hard choice is what you know you should be doing. The hard choice will lead you to the edge of your comfort zone. It gets you closer to the goals you dream about.

It is a tough battle when deciding between the two. They don’t get along. They’re like the angel and the devil that sits on your shoulders talking to you. Each one wants you to listen to them.

The easy choice wants you to take the rest of the day off. Just begin tomorrow it tells you. It wants you to turn on the TV and find something interesting to watch, instead of what you really need to be doing.

The hard choice wants you to do what you said you were going to do. It doesn’t want you to put it off till tomorrow. It wants to make your dreams come true for you, but it can’t do it for you. You have to do the work. It tells you to turn off the TV, and do what you should be doing.

Which one do you choose most of the time?

  • Just wanted to say great podcast Benny. You really sum up this mental battle perfectly. I have failed a lot at it but the brief moments in my life when I have been persistent in sticking with the hard choices have produced all of my best results. Love your stuff. Every time I read something by you or listen to a podcast it just really seems to resonate big time. Thanks so much and look forward to more in the future!

    • Thanks so much for listening! The biggest battle we have is in our head. We’ve got to learn to fight it. It’s possible, but with more training like a prize fighter, we can be victorious.

    Hey Benny,

You have a natural way of helping people work on issues without sounding condescending. I very rarely look forward to anyone’s newest blog post but you’re the exception. You’re only 1 of 3 people/bloggers that will get access to my inbox.

I love your level of sincerity.

    • Thank you so much Ron. That’s is a great compliment!

  • Hector Avellaneda

WHat’s going on Benny! Man, you’re quite the traveler! hahaha.. Awesome dude. The advantages of just being able to

    • Hey Hector! Thanks for listening! You’ve summed it up really well. People don’t want to put in the hard work. They want everything given to them and if so they’ll never get what they truly want!

Great post and comments — I make the hard choices as often as I can, but there are definitely times when I take the easy way out. I posted this on my facebook and my friends/family loved it. Just what I needed for a monotonous Tuesday!

  • I have discovered that the hard choices turn out to be easy and the easy choices turn out to be hard down the line. Therefore, similarly to yourself, I always make a conscious effort to take the path of high resistance rather than low resistance because it pays dividends down the line. Great piece. Keep them coming.
