GBL 038: Be Careful Who You Tell Your Goals and Dreams To

Isn’t it a good thing to tell people what our big hairy goals are? By telling them won’t they help keep us accountable?

Be careful about doing that.

There will be a lot of people, including family and close friends, who won’t agree with what you’re doing. It’s not like you’re breaking the law, but it’s almost gets the same response. They won’t understand why you would want to quit a nice and stable job. They won’t understand why you’re doing whatever it is you dream about doing.

They try to dissuade you and they believe they’re doing it out of love. If enough people tell you the same thing, it could cause you to believe they are right.

In this episode, I talk about why it’s so important to keep your goals and dreams to yourself.

Hope you enjoy!

Great topic! I’ll be sharing this with a friend and I’ve got two questions! What if you already shared with such a person? How do you bounce back from the (subtle) negative comments which just linger on at the back of your mind? Annnd… what if the thing you’re not sharing is the only thing you’re doing these days and people ask you what you’re up to… what should you say? I usually say “not much” but that makes me sound like a time waster/ loser, however, I’ve learned to live with that perception because I’m waiting for the big day when my dreams will finally come to fruition!

  • Benny Benny Benny! I actually seen that comment. I don’t think I added anything to it. But I can tell you it’s a mistake be made. As much as I want my family and friends to be involved in what I’m doing. They aren’t excited about it which is frustrating. Great topic at an opportune time.

Sharing your goals decreases the likelihood of them getting done. It feels good to talk about them. They’re hard to actually do.

  • Great post thanks, I also find that to be true. I guess if they do not understand why you’re doing that they also cannot put themselves into your “shoes” and see the things your way. As Adam also mentioned below, that only brings frustration to you because your expectation is of course to get their support and not dissuasion.
